Henry Leland founded two iconic American luxury car companies. The first was Cadillac, which he cofounded in 1902, sold to General Motors in 1908, and remained as an executive until 1917. After a dispute with another cofounder, Leland resigned to start the Lincoln Motor Company with his son, Wilfred, naming the company for the first president for whom he had voted.
Since the first Lincoln cars rolled off the assembly line in 1920, the brand has come to represent American luxury. In 1922, Lincoln was bought by the Ford Motor Company and throughout the 1920s and ’30s Lincoln vehicles set the standard for luxury in the United States.
